Metal water tanks are used for various purposes such as in industries, households, agriculture, etc. One of the most common types of tanks is the iron water tank. These tanks have been used for water storage for a long time. Over this period, with advancements in technology, the construction of metal water tanks has also seen significant improvements. Depending on the type of water usage, different types of metal water tanks can be employed. Various factors influence the choice of tank type, the most important of which are price and tank lifespan. In the following sections, we will introduce and examine the features of these tanks.

Iron Water Tank

One of the oldest types of water storage tanks is the iron tank. Due to the abundance of this metal and its easier processing, the price of these tanks is lower compared to other metal water tanks. Historically, this type of tank has been widely used for various applications.

Disadvantages of Metal Water Tanks

Metal water tanks have some drawbacks, the most significant of which are corrosion and rust. Corrosion (iron rusting) not only reduces the lifespan of the tank but also significantly affects the quality of the stored water. If this water is intended for drinking, it can cause serious issues with its taste and color, making it unacceptable from a health perspective. One solution to address this issue with metal water tanks is to coat them with various protective layers such as epoxy paint, polyurethane, etc.

Galvanized Water Tank

In fact, a galvanized metal water tank is another solution to prevent iron corrosion. Galvanized metal is iron (a specific type) that is coated with a layer of zinc (through factory processes) to prevent corrosion. The lifespan of a galvanized tank is longer than that of an iron water tank. Today, many metal water tanks are made from galvanized material. Galvanized water tanks are often welded together. However, these tanks start to corrode at the welded joints because the zinc coating wears off at these points. To solve this problem, modern technology now allows the construction of modular galvanized metal water tanks. The modules are connected with bolts and nuts and sealed through a specific process. This type of metal water tank has a longer lifespan and higher cost compared to iron tanks. To further extend the lifespan of these tanks, anti-corrosion coatings can be applied to the external and internal surfaces.

Stainless Steel Water Tank

Another type of metal water tank is the stainless steel tank, which is more expensive than iron and galvanized tanks. Due to their high cost, stainless steel tanks are mainly used for water storage and other purposes in the food and pharmaceutical industries, and are less commonly used in households and other industries. These tanks have good resistance to corrosion, but their high price is a disadvantage of this type of metal water tank.
